February progress - Allietare

At this point, my Allietare quilt top is finished and ready for the quilting process.  I'm quilting it on my Bernina 440 domestic and I've decided against using the stitch regulator since there are so many seams.

I used the walking foot to stitch in the ditch around each large block, and around the narrow gold border.  Then I did a small zig-zag around the outer edges just to keep them in place.

Next I free-motion quilted in the setting pieces around the outer edges.

Now I'm working my way down the diagonal columns of blocks with free-motion quilting.

I plan to scallop the edges on the black border, using the templates Bonnie Hunter has provided, but that can't be done until the quilting is finished.

The photo below shows the backing on the top left and the binding on the bottom left.

Carole Doyle's Clue 6

This week's clue gave us the final cutting of pieces, and the instructions for how to put all our previous units into blocks and side setting pieces.  After these parts are assembled, the blocks will be put together in rows, on point.

This is a LOT to do, and my time for quilting has just not been here this past weekend, nor will it be here for the next several days.  So what I did was to first cut the remaining pieces (except for the outer border, since I haven't decided what fabric I will use for that) and then assemble one star block, one alternate block, and one side setting block

Then I stacked all my remaining units into their respective blocks so that I can easily chain piece to assemble the three different sections as I find the time.

Here are the stacks for the star blocks, along with the one I made, shown below the stacks.

Here are the stacks for the alternate blocks, and the one I have completed.

Finally, here are the stacks for the side setting pieces, and to the left, the one I have made.

On the right side of this blog you will see a photo of Bonnie Hunter's own finished Allietare quilt.  Hopefully, eventually mine will resemble hers.

............Later on Sunday afternoon, I managed to make a little time to sew a few blocks together. These blocks haven't been sewn into rows or columns, but I'm happy to have made a bit of progress!

Carole D's Clue 5

Clue 5

This clue used pieces we had already cut and/or sewn in earlier clues, so that made it a little easier to work on.  However, matching seam intersections and trying to not lop off points made it a bit tricky, so I still couldn't just speed through it.

Here is a close-up of the first part of Clue 5.  I have these stacked in sets of 5, but each is slightly different.

This is a close-up of the second part of Clue 5.

Here are all parts of the completed Clue 5.

Carole D's Clue 4

Clue 4 - Monday, Dec. 21, 2015

Clue four is a bit more demanding than the first three, but I love the way the units are turning out.  Under each unit in the photo are three more with the same red and the same black, but with different neutrals. I'm having to sew more slowly so that I can be very careful as to how the pieces are lined up.  Otherwise, the intersections just don't match!

As you can see, I haven't finished all the units yet, but the pieces are cut and I'm hopeful that I will finish these before Christmas Day!

..............later in the week.............Tuesday, December 22.................
I have finished the thirty sets.  Each stack of four has a constant red, a constant black, and four different neutrals.

It's time to show Clue 3!

Here are 120 + a few extra gold and neutral four patches, and 36+ a few extra neutral rectangles.

I'm using today's post to show my finished results for both Clue #1 from last week, and Clue #2 from this week.

Here are my half-square triangles for Clue #1.

These are my "decapitated geese"  (or houses, or Santa hats) for Clue #2.  I've made a few extra for each step, just in case!

Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt, Allietare, will be the third of Bonnie's mysteries that I have done.  I've collected my fabrics and have cut the pieces for the first clue.
